Junior Jills wrap up winning season
The Oakwood Junior Jills select basketball program concluded its third season by completing tournament play in Kettering, Monroe, and Middletown over the last two weekends. The fourth grade Junior Jills, coached by Bryan Sowder and Steve Cobb, finished in third place in the Dayton Metro Division III South tournament after being eliminated by Centerville Hustle Gold. These fourth graders have a very promising future and we look forward to watching them develop in the next two seasons. The fourth grade Junior Jills are: Emmy Cobb, Emily Koenig, Paige Warren, Sydney Ringer, Kathryn Rogers, Sydney Jones, Rachel Reed, Grace Ulery, and Maggie Stoecklein.
The fifth grade Junior Jills completed a “two-peat” by defending their ‘08 Dayton Metro Division III South championship in exciting fashion. After losing to Monroe 22-20 on a basket with 0.1 seconds, the fifth graders won an exciting championship game rematch 28-26 to retain their title. These intensely contested finals attracted so many spectators the games were played in the Monroe High School gymnasium. Their final season record was 19-7, 14-2 in conference. The fifth graders are coached by Tony Wootton and Bryan Sowder. The fifth grade Junior Jills are: Emma Sowder, Courtney Eggleston, Sarah Penix, Ashley Duff, Claire Wootton, Lauren Turner, Inge Mueller, Katelyn Cress, Jasmine Pinkney, and Sally McMillan.
The sixth grade Junior Jills, playing in a highly competitive age group which included teams from several Division I high school communities, did not place at their tournament in Middletown but had a successful season nonetheless, especially in terms of player development. The sixth graders finished their regular season strong with wins in four of their last five games and challenging eventual champion Monroe before losing by one point in a January regular season game in which they had trailed by 11. The sixth graders were coached for all three seasons by Bruce Teeters and John Jervis. The 2008-2009 campaign was the last season for the sixth grade Junior Jills and we wish them continued success at the junior high level. The sixth grade Junior Jills are: Anna Lauterbach*, Caroline Rubino*, Taylor Jervis*, Caroline Haley*, Lily Delatore, Ellie Bartlett, Madison Teeters*, Ellie Randall*, Kacey Greer* and Emily Ackerman*. The asterisk annotates players who participated all three seasons.
The organization would especially like to thank departing sixth grade coaches Bruce Teeters and John Jervis for their three years of dedication to the program. Coaches are non-paid volunteers. In addition to coaching, Bruce Teeters played an integral role in creating the organization three years ago and setting it on the path for future success. The Oakwood Junior Jills are a non-profit select basketball program open to Oakwood residents in the fourth to sixth grade. The organization is dedicated not only to developing players but promoting girl’s basketball in the community in general. Tryouts are held in the fall, usually early October. Information will be posted on the web-site www.oakwoodjuniorjills.org.
Patterson Park baseball sign ups underway
Registrations are now being accepted for spring baseball at Patterson Park Little League. Games are played at our Little League Complex on Irving Ave. close to University of Dayton Campus. Players age 5 & 6 (T-Ball), 7 & 8 (coach pitch), 9 & 10 (minors) and 11& 12 (majors) will begin practice in late March. Games will begin in mid April.
Nine to twelve-year-old players registered for above leagues may also register for our Transitional Baseball program. This program is designed for a limited number of 9 to 12 year old players seriously interested in advancing their baseball skills. This is open (on a space available basis) to minors and majors players registered to play spring ball at Patterson Park. Activities will be on 70 and 80 foot bases to challenge the young player and ease the eventual jump to 90 foot bases in junior high school and beyond. Sessions will generally be on weekends so that the player can still participate fully on their regular team at Patterson Park.
For 2009 registration information please call Jim Murphy at 298-8473 or e-mail Pete Kramer at prk2@sbcglobal.net
