Blanket Concert Aug. 12

Wright Memorial Public Library Summer Blanket Concert Series is proud to host a concert by noted Columbus jazz vocalist Dwight Lenox and his group, Lenox Avenue Express, on Wednesday, Aug. 12 at 6:30 p.m. While growing up in New York, Dwight honed his vocal talent in the church choir. After moving to Los Angeles, he went on to study a range of musical styles, from blues to ballads and jazz to swing. Dwight’s impeccable stylistic instincts and rhythmic phrasing have garnered the attention of some of the finest musicians in the industry. He continues to be a featured vocalist with the 17-piece Columbus Jazz Orchestra and has performed with such renowned musicians as Sammy Tucker, organist Hank Marr, Ramsey Lewis, Herbie Mann, and many others.

Summer Family Blanket Concerts are funded by a grant from the Wright Memorial Public Library Foundation which has been supporting special library projects and events and capital growth for the library since 1997. This concert was made possible with additional funding from the Ohio Arts Council and will take place on the north lawn of the library, with the meeting room as the rain site. Patrons should bring blankets or lawn chairs for seating and are welcome to bring a picnic supper if they wish.

The program is free and open to the public. Anyone with questions can contact the library at (937) 294-7171.

Wright Library to be closed
Aug. 16 - 23

Staff on furlough due to
drop in state funding

Wright Memorial Library will be closed from Sunday, Aug. 16 through Sunday, Aug. 23. The temporary closure is needed because of the significant reduction in funding from the state of Ohio. Public libraries in Ohio are facing a 31 percent drop in the revenue from the state’s Public Library Fund. Wright Library will receive about $358,000 less from the state in 2009 than it received in 2008. The cuts will continue through 2010. Before this year, the library counted on the state for 80 percent of its annual revenue.

Patrons will be able to use the library’s web site and catalog during the closure, but staff will not be working, so requests for holds and interlibrary loans will not be processed until the library opens again at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 24. Overdue fines will not be charged for the dates the library is closed for furlough. Patrons are encouraged to “stock up” on library materials the week before the furlough and hold onto them through the week the library is closed, rather than returning items in the book drops.

Wright Memorial Public Library is located at 1776 Far Hills Avenue in Oakwood. Questions? Call (937) 294-7171 for more information. Wright Library’s web site is at www.WrightLibrary.org.
