And they're off! Jills cross-country heads out on run.
Last Saturday the Oakwood High School Cross Country Team ran in the 39th Annual Troy Invitational along the Great Miami River. Both the varsity girls and boys finished sixth in the team scoring.
The Jills were lead by Julia Sizek and Elizabeth Connelly who finished eleventh and twelfth respectively. Erin Taylor crossed the line next for the Jills in twenty-seventh place. Rounding out the team scoring for the Jills were Hannah McCarthy, Autumn Bruno and Ginny Beth Fulford. The Jills also had four runners in the reserve race, Alexandra Harmony, (24th), Emi Banke (25th), Molly Jackson, (37th) and Gretchen Hochwalt (44th).
The Jacks were led by Peter Hix who won the 5K run by almost two seconds. Aaron Pruitt and Philip Sizek rounded out the scoring for the boys finishing fortieth and forty-fifth. Joey Neff and Marc Skill also ran in the varsity race.
The boys reserve team had a strong showing in the Reserve Race finishing second in the team scoring. Andy Lamb and Tory Tomlinson crossed the finish line in fifth and sixth place. Andrew Redden, Keith Mueller and Ethan Kissock were the other scorers, finishing ninth, fifteenth and nineteenth respectively. Other Oakwood runners in the reserve race were, in order of finish, Will Reese, Casey Linzmeier, Josh Moulton, Noah Berry, Michael Wuebker, Andy Myers, Eli Colllinson, and Evan Duffley.

Soccer Jacks 2nd in area poll with 8-0-1 record
The Miami Valley Coaches Association’s most recent poll now ranks the Jacks second in the area, tied with Bellbrook and still behind Carroll. The Jacks remain undefeated at 8-0-1.
On Sept. 18, the Milton Union Bulldogs came to Oakwood. The Bulldogs hunkered down with a compact defense, but within minutes, the Jacks exerted total domination, culminating in a header by Kyle Kissock from short range into the nets. But the goal was denied because of an offside call. At nineteen minutes, the Bulldogs scored on their first shot, from 25 yards, looping over the outstretched fingers of the backpedaling goalie Ryan McFarland, grazing the underside of the bar.
Thereafter, Milton Union became even more compact, and Oakwood had trouble breaking them down. Phil Wille had a hard shot from 25 yards, sailing over the bar. David Shephard had a thundering mid field header. Tristan Schnader, in the backfield, found Zach Hood in center who played wide to Kissock on wing, centering it back to Shephard, who shot low and wide at 15 yards. Wille again shot over the bar at 30 yards. Shephard passed to Tino Weckerling, who slid it to Wille, who hammered it from 4 yards—saved by the sliding Bulldog keeper. Andrew Dickerson shot from 20 yards, zipping just wide of the post. Finally, with only 15 minutes left in the game, Andrew Wade found Wille in the penalty box. Wille shot through traffic, on the ground, past the diving keeper for Oakwood’s tying goal.
Oakwood regained possession, and Schnader pounded a free kick from 40 yards, sailing two feet over the bar. With 8 minutes left in the game, the coaches made the decision to move Schnader from sweeper to striker, putting added pressure on the Bulldog defense. A bevy of shots ensued. Hood shot just wide, and then shot wide again, from 20 yards. Schnader tore down the left channel and was upended in the box, but the referee moved the ball to a point several yards away, outside the box, for
a free kick. Schnader zinged the ball on the ground through a gap in the defense, across the mouth of goal, setting up several rapid fire shots, but nothing scored. Schnader fed Shephard for a shot at five yards—saved by the Bulldog keeper.
With one minute left in the game, the crowd biting its nails, Alex Kooser threaded a long, inch-perfect pass, on the ground, finding Hood, who netted a grounder, from 12 yards, inside the left post for a final score of 2-1. Oakwood had 21 shots; Milton Union six. McFarland had four saves.
Jills varsity soccer plays to a tie with Milton Union
The Oakwood girls varsity soccer team played just one game last week, visiting league rival Milton Union on Thursday night. The Jills had defeated the Lady Bulldogs earlier in the season by a 6-0 count, but this was a much-improved Milton team.
Oakwood controlled the action in the first half, outshooting Milton Union 5 to 2, but narrowly missing on several quality opportunities. Christina Davis, Claire Davis, Colleen Hallinan, and Molly Breidenbach all had shots on goal, but the Milton Union goalkeeper was up to the task.
The Jills came out strong in the second half with a flurry of shots, but nothing to show for them. In one early sequence, Maeve Harper made a nice pass to Alex Miller, who then found Christina Davis on the wing, Christina’s shot sailing just wide. Harper then trapped a Milton Union direct kick and fed Alex Miller, whose kick from 20 yards settled into the keeper’s hands. Eight minutes into the half defender Erin Riley made a nice crossing pass to Alex Miller. Miller tapped the ball to Sarah Shewell, whose shot went just high. Thirty seconds later Claire Davis found herself open, but her low drive was stopped by the Bulldog keeper.
Finally, with 17:31 to go in the game, Taylor Garrity gave a beautiful assist to Claire Davis. Claire got by the last defender, took her time, and drilled one into the upper right corner for a 1 to 0 lead. In the next minute Oakwood had two more great chances, a Claire Davis shot going just high off a pass from Hallinan, and an Alex Miller left footed shot going wide. Milton Union kept battling, and with seven minutes to go a Lady Bulldog throw in was knocked down by an Oakwood defender, but right to an unmarked Milton Union player, who made the easy kick into the net to tie the game at 1 to 1. That’s the way it ended, each team getting eight second half shots.
With the tie Oakwood’s record stands at 3 wins, 5 losses, and 2 ties, 3 wins, two losses and two ties in league play. The Jills are home twice this week, hosting Bellbrook tonight (Tuesday, Sept. 23rd), and Franklin on Thursday. The Waynesville game, originally scheduled for last Tuesday, will be played on Monday Night, October 6, at Waynesville. The highlight of the week for the Jills was the announcement that senior midfielder Sarah Shewell had been named a National Merit Semifinalist.
Jills hockey bags 3-1 tally for the week
Last week was a solid week for the Oakwood Field Hockey team with the varsity bagging three wins and a lone overtime loss and the JV winning both of their contests. The week started with a 3-0 win away against league opponent Indian Hill.
Scores by Ali Taylor (assist Molly Bartlett), Hannah French (assist Sarah French) and Sarah French (assist Sarah Oda). The Jills then hosted Mt. Notre Dame. Oakwood dominated and should have pulled ahead however the score remained tied at the end of regulation. In overtime, after a few exchanges, the sidelines erupted when Oakwood seemingly scored the winning goal. The goal however was disallowed when the play was whistled as a penalty. Shortly thereafter MND was fouled while on a fast break and was awarded a penalty corner. T
he Oakwood defense was unable to clear the ball and MND scored the sudden death win. On Saturday, the Jills traveled to Louisville for two sweltering games. The first game was against Presentation Academy which was dominated from the beginning by the Jills. The Oakwood defense was not challenged during the game as PA had no shots on goal and only one possession inside the scoring circle. Meanwhile the offense constantly pressed the PA defense and goals were scored by Molly Bartlett (assist Caroline Hartel), Allie Taylor (assist Sarah Oda), and Lizzy Johnsen for a 3-0 shutout.
The second game of the day was a hot as the weather when the Jills took on the very talented and athletic host Mercy Academy. Oakwood came out with an offensive minded lineup and was pressuring Mercy early and often but Mercy was the first to score on a fast break. After multiple corner opportunities and even more shots on goal Bartlett tied the score with 9:08 left in the half. The half ended tied 1-1.
With only 6 minutes elapsed in the second half Mercy again went ahead but then the Jills turned on the fire power. Allie Taylor tied the score at the 17:31 minute mark and Oakwood took the lead for good at the 14:21 as Caroline Hartel scored on the Jills third penalty corner off the goalies pads. A furious flurry of full field action ensued with Mercy dominating shots on goal but the defense lead by (recently returned from injury) Co-captain Lauren Sobel held fast. Goalie Amy Beck also had a number of excellent saves in the game. The game was put away by yet another goal by Allie Taylor (assist Sarah Oda) with 30 seconds remaining in the game for a 4-2 win. Afterward a Mercy representative said that this was the most points allowed by Mercy in recent memory.
The Jills came back down to earth in their win against one of the weaker teams in the league this past Thursday. Oakwood hosted Talawanda and dominated the game from the beginning however could only come away with goals by Molly Bartlett (Sarah Oda – assist) and Sarah French (Maddie Shearer – assist) for a 2-0 win. Once again the JV had no problem dispatching the Braves JV in a 6-0 win. Goals were scored by Amy Thie, Peanut Johnson, Emily Skill, Katie Taylor, Maddie Shearer, and Margaret Thompson.
Oakwood finished the week by hosting Lancaster. The Jills got on the board early with a goal by Hanna French but despite many many opportunities in the first half could not get another goal. In the second half the home team pulled away with goals by Sarah Oda, Ali Taylor and Brittney Hemmelgarn (Margaret Thompson – assist). At no time was Lancaster in the game allowing 32 shots on their goal to 0 for Oakwood.
The JV machine rolled on to an identical 4-0 win. The season now stands at 8 wins and 3 losses. Come down to Irving Field on Wednesday as the Jills host cross town rival Fairmont at 5 p.m.
