The wedding took place on May 17 at the Mokrice Castle in Brezice, Slovenia. The bride is a 1992 graduate of Oakwood High School and a 1996 graduate of Emory University. She is employed by IBM in London, England as a Sales Executive. The groom joined the Royal Navy and graduated from Dartmouth College in Plymouth, England in 1993 and from Greenwich University in London, England in 1995. He is the Managing Director of SOLA Consulting in London, England. Natalie Smith and Ryan Maddux were united in marriage on May 25, 2008. The ceremony was performed at Fairhaven Church in Centerville, Ohio with Pastor David Smith officiating. The reception immediately followed at The Dayton Country Club. The bride is the daughter of Robert and Holly Smith of Oakwood, Ohio and the groom is the son of Terry and Kay Maddux of Paducah, KY. Natalie is a 1999 graduate of Oakwood High School and received her Master of Accountancy degree from Miami University in 2004. She presently works in the tax practice at Ernst & Young LLP in Cincinnati. Ryan is a 1998 graduate of Terre Haute South Vigo High School and received his degree in Mechanical Engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, IN in 2002. He presently works for Toyota as a Paint Equipment Specialist. Following a honeymoon in Hawaii, the couple has made their home in Cincinnati. The ceremony was held on June 7, 2008 in the Council Chambers of the City of Oakwood with The Honorable Mayor Judy Cook presiding. Whitney is a 2001 graduate of Oakwood High School and is employed by Moraine Materials Company. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. George E. Kling, Sr. and Mr. and Mrs. Martin A. Evers, Jr. Jason is the son of Bruce Archdeacon and Sherri Waddell of Washington Township. He is a 1999 graduate of Snider High School in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. On Sunday, Aug. 24, Troop 101 held a Court of Honor Ceremony to honor the recent promotion of Charlie Haley to the rank of Eagle Scout. Haley, a 17 yr. old resident of Oakwood has been a member of Troop 101 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church for the past six years.
Haley’s Eagle Project included improving the landscape and general outside area of the inner-city soup kitchen, The House of Bread located on Orth Avenue in Dayton. According to Haley, “The project went smoothly thanks to the help of many scouts, families, and volunteers from The House of Bread.” The project involved more than 100 hours of work over a period of two weekends.
Matt Kell, Troop 101 scoutmaster said, “Charlie learned a great deal in his years in scouting and really demonstrated them in the top notch project he did for the community. He has become a great leader for our troop.”
Haley is the first Eagle among the largest recruitment group for Troop 101. Currently the troop has 24 members. Haley, who plans to study engineering in college next year, is the son of John and Carrie Haley.

Naval officer returns home from Iraq

Cmdr. Rick Poeppelmeier (US Navy) returned from his six month deployment to Baghdad, Iraq as the Financial Officer for the Joint Contingency Contracting Command. During his deployment he led a military and civilian team in tracking and reporting the Government of Iraq’s progress in executing their budget, highlighting the efforts to provide the Iraqi citizens required goods and services. Rick briefed this progress to the Commander of Multi National Forces, General Petraeus, on a weekly basis providing information used to brief Congress on the progress in Iraq.
During his deployment Cmdr. Poeppelmeier was awarded both the Defense Meritorious Service Medal and the Joint Service Achievement Medal. He is stationed in Washington DC working for the Logistics Programs and Policies branch for the Chief of Naval Operations.
Cmdr. Poeppelmeier is an OHS Class of 1985 alumnus.
Dayton Ballet names Susan Kettering president
The Dayton Ballet Board of Trustees has named Susan S. Kettering as the newest president of the Board of Trustees. For over 20 years Susan Kettering has woven a deep commitment to dance into her full life as mother of four children, business woman and philanthropist. She has a genuine appreciation for the beauty of ballet, the difficulty of the discipline and the empowering benefits of dance education.
Susan deeply values volunteerism and has given countless hours and shared her many talents behind the scenes. She is equally adept with a needle and thread backstage as well as planning gala events for the constant flow of fundraising efforts in the arts. She is on the Board of Trustees of Dayton Ballet and Boca Ballet Theatre.
“First, I love ballet, the entire process of producing a ballet. I love the creativity, the discipline, the athleticism, and the sheer beauty of the art form. I believe that the arts are important in each of our lives and for the Dayton community. Dayton Ballet has been a part of Dayton’s history for the past 81 years. With the help of the Board of Trustees, I want to insure that it continues to have quality performances, athletes, and outreach and educational opportunities for the Dayton community for another 81 years by creating a new business model that will carry Dayton Ballet’s success into the future,” explains Kettering about her interest in and vision for Dayton Ballet.
Her patronage of (the) ballet has provided world premiere performances, revitalized classic favorites, met challenge grants and aided annual budgets to finish in the black.
Kettering church announces new pastor
The new senior pastor of David’s United Church of Christ took to the pulpit of the 182-year-old Kettering church last Sunday, Sept. 7. A reception followed welcoming him to the community.
The Rev. Dr. Brian Q. Newcomb was called to his new pastoral duties following a nearly-three-year search by the congregation. David’s previous senior pastor, William Youngkin, retired in the spring of 2005.
Dr. Newcomb comes to David’s from Christ Church UCC in Maplewood, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis, where he served as pastor since 1994. Prior to Christ Church, he served Nazareth UCC in St. Louis for 11 years.
Brian was ordained into the United Church of Christ in 1983, after earning a Master of Divinity degree from Bethel Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minn. He finished his Doctor of Ministry at Eden Theological Seminary in St. Louis, in 2005, with his dissertation entitled Contemporary Worship in the Mainline Setting. Brian has been active in both the St. Louis communi ty and in the United Church of Christ in the Missouri Mid-South Conference.
Born in Connersville, IN., and spending his early years in Cincinnati, Brian’s formative years were in western New York State. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in bible and philosophy, in 1977 from Houghton College.
Brian Quincy Newcomb is a recognized music critic with reviews appearing regularly from 1986 – 2004 in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and The Riverfront Times. His features and reviews have appeared in Billboard and Paste Magazine, and he currently contributes to HM Magazine, CCMcom.com and associated websites.
Brian, his wife Susan and son John currently reside in Oakwood.
Bath appointed to local State Farm office
Agency Field Executive, Kim Bibb, has announced the appointment of local State Farm Agent Angie Barth. Barth’s office, located at 103 W. Stroop Road in Kettering, opened for business Sept. 1, 2008.
Barth is a graduate of the University of Charleston in Charleston, West Virginia, with a Bachelor’s degree in Finance and Accounting.
Angie and her husband Chris are residents of Oakwood. In her spare time Angie enjoys travel, tennis and golf.
Barth and her staff invite the public to visit the office and discuss their insurance and financial services needs.
