Dayton Raiders Swim Club win Ohio state title

Over Saint Patrick’s Day weekend, fourteen Oakwood swimmers, part of a contingency of 65 swimmers from the Dayton Raiders Swim Club, joined the top age group swimmers at the Ohio Junior Olympic Championships at Keating Natatorium in Cincinnati, Ohio.  The Dayton Raiders were crowned “State Champions” by winning the overall team title, their fourth in five years.

The Dayton squad is the only swim club outside of greater Cincinnati to ever win the state title since organized AAU and USA competition began in 1960.

The top five clubs in overall team scoring are:

Dayton Raiders, 2,210
Northern KY Clippers, 1,893
Cincinnati Aquatics Club, 1,715.5
Cincinnati Marlins, 1,458.5
Upper Arlington Swim Club, 1,414.5

Sanctioned by USA Swimming, this meet is the highest level of age group competition for the state of Ohio.  Swimmers must achieve a very stringent USA Swimming state level (AA) qualifying time in the 10 & Under, 11-12, and 13-14 age groups in order to compete.

The following swimmers earned medals for top eight swims at the meet: Sydney Lofquist, Katie Sickinger, Ally Mayhew, Gretchen Pocisk, and Cliff Goertemiller.  Goertemiller, 12, is state champion in the 500 Free (5:06.38) and currently ranked 12th in the nation. Mayhew, 12, earned silver in the 50 Free (:25.43), the 33rd fastest time in the nation and also a new team record. Lofquist, 10, earned Bronze in the 200 Free (2:17.01).

All fourteen Oakwood swimmers train and compete with the Dayton Raiders and several have multi-state (Zone) and national championship (Sectional) opportunities as a result of their performance at the Ohio Swimming Junior Olympics.

Swimmers with Zone level times (AAA time standard or higher, top 3 percent nationally) qualify for the USA Central Zone Championships this August in Indianapolis at the IUPUI Natatorium.

Oakwood Zone level swimmers include: Sydney Lofquist, Ally Mayhew, Katie Sickinger, Gretchen Pocisk, Lydia Pocisk, and Cliff Goertemiller.

Swimmers with USA Sectional level times, an “open” time standard for the nations senior-level swimmers, will compete at the USA Sectional Championships held on Mar 27-30 in Indianapolis.

These swimmers include: Gretchen Pocisk and Stephanie Steiner, both of whom are ranked among the nation’s top 100 in their respective events.

Spring sports writers sought for Register

The Oakwood Register is looking for a few students and parents to volunteer and cover spring sports at Oakwood High School and write a short story about the games each week. Stories do not need to be “play-by-plays,” just an overview of the highlights and win-loss scores.

Sports to be covered include track, softball, baseball and boys tennis, all on the varsity level.  We also welcome junior varsity tennis and baseball and junior high baseball stories as space allows. Photos are optional.

Anyone who is interested please call Lance Winkler at the Register office,
294-2662.
