The one hundred and thirty fourth Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show – held at Madison Square Garden – is the second oldest sporting event in the country – the Kentucky Derby beats them by one year! And this year the Westminster show was not ‘top dog’ as far as the national TV coverage was concerned. NBC carried the Winter Olympics each night from eight ‘til…through slush ‘n rain and dark of night. Finally, USA network carried the final evening and Best of Show judging at Westminster on Tuesday evening. The winner was a most animated, and handsome ‘Scottish Terrier’. The New York Times did not carry any mention on Wednesday of Tuesday night’s Show. Is this the final proof of “…going to the dogs?”

David Findley, chief statistician of the National Bureau of the Census, spends every holiday with his family at 1221 Oakwood Avenue. He belongs to most every international mathematical society and his scheduled lectures keep him out of the country more than he’s at home in Washington. Consequently, his Sunday morning long distance phone calls are infrequent although they last for at least an hour. “We attended an interesting re-enactment of the Lincoln-Douglas debates last night – at the Ford Theater…There were three actors – the third being ‘Mary Douglas’ who moderated. Oh, and tonight Mary and I are going to Shakespeare’s‘ “Anthony and Cleopatra”…without words! It’s a Russian production.” ‘Round Town will report next time David’s at home and calls…about the ‘…silent Shakespeare.’
“In March I’ll be giving a lecture at Oxford and hope to see Nancy’s son Code (who’s a grad student at Cambridge) and then this summer I’m giving a course in ‘Physical Mathematics’ at Stockholm Univ…”

Town and Country Mall had their usual ‘walkers’ on Wednesday. A gentleman came out of ‘Buffalo Wings’ and stopped dead…stared…and said: “I know you!” It was Larry Denny! “Are you still riding? I’m not riding now – I’m driving and I’ve got some top ‘fine-harness-horses’ – they’re in Florida ‘showing’ right now, but they’ll be home (near Trotwood) in March…I’ll give you a call and get you out to our place to see our horses….we’ve got a painting of you on our wall…it’s a hunting scene with you, Jack Heck and Jack Reeder and a lot of hounds…painted by Pat Whipp...didn’t we all have a great time…with Ginny and Herb Whalen…Helen Sproat…

And there was a gentleman talking to the salesperson in the ‘Twenty One and Up’ shop in Town and Country. He looked familiar - it was Boyd Keys and he was talking about “The Wall Street Journal”. Boyd was a Col. White - Fairview classmate and it was terrific to see him.
