Deadline for Andrews Hall of Honor nominees set for April 21

The Oakwood City School District is announcing that written nominations are now being accepted for the Sam Andrews Educational Hall of Honor.  Nominations must be submitted to the Superintendent, Dr. Mary Jo Scalzo, and mailed or delivered to the Board Office, 20 Rubicon Rd., Dayton 45409, by April 21, 2006.

The nominee should be retired from school employment or voluntary school-related service for three years or more.

Your nomination should include how the honoree has made  “a distinguished and significant contribution toward the beneficial growth and education of the students in this community which shall serve to commemorate the high ideals that characterized the life and career of Sam Andrews.”

Please include adequate background information on the nominee so that he/she may receive optimum consideration by the selection committee. Once nominated, a person remains eligible during the year of nomination and for two additional years.

A nomination form and information on the background of the award is available by calling Grace Brown at the Board of Education (297-5332); however, submissions may be made without using the form. The nominations will include a three-step process:

Nominations for the 2006 Sam Andrews Educational Hall of Honor must be submitted by April 21, 2006.

Names of the nominees will be published in the local papers in April.
Supporting letters for these nominees should be submitted to the school district by May 26, 2006.

Prior nominees include:
Year two nomination - Ralph Ferguson, Oakwood Junior/Senior High English teacher from 1953 – 1980.  Letters of support for Mr. Ferguson are currently being accepted.

Nominees will be selected in June and the induction ceremony will be held in September 2006.

Wright Library seeking volunteers

Wright Library is looking for a few good volunteers. The Library needs volunteers to staff the Internet sign-up desk from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.  These hours could be split among several volunteers as needed. Duties include: signing up patrons for time on the Internet computers, keeping track of the sign-up waiting list and notifying patrons when their computer time is up.

The library is also looking for volunteers to help with the Reading Outreach Program at Sunrise Assisted Living in Oakwood. Volunteers are needed for one hour every two weeks to read aloud with the Reading Group already established at Sunrise in Oakwood.

If interested in either of these opportunities, please call Linda Cosgrove at 294-7171 or stop by the library and pick up a volunteer application form.

City to consider ‘pocket park’

With the increased business traffic on Far Hills Avenue, and the construction of the new retail building at the corner of Far Hills and Orchard, City Council has asked staff to look at ways to make the area more user-friendly. A small “pocket park” has been one of the suggestions; with the idea that it could benefit both the Oakwood Business district businesses as well as  shoppers and pedestrians.  According to City Manager Norbert Klopsch, the study “is in the very early stage.”  A preliminary work site plan will be communicated to area businesses, then presented to the Budget Review Committee for their consideration. Should the project be a “go” it would be budgeted for next year.”

A small pocket park at Orchard and Far Hills Avenue would close Orchard to auto traffic and replace it with green space and possibly some parking. Envision Works has been contracted to research and design a possible plan.

Planning Commission meets April 5

The Planning Commission will meet Wednesday, April 5 at 4:30 p.m. in the City Building to hear two requests.

Sunrise of Oakwood is requesting approval for a new sign that can be seen by both northbound and southbound traffic. Currently the sign is visible to only southbound traffic. The projected sign, to be illuminated, is larger than code. To install, Planning Commission must give its approval.

The second item on the agenda is a rezoning request for the Sophia Klein property located at the corner of Oak Knoll Drive and Far Hills Avenue. The two buildings have been purchased and will be razed and replaced with a two-story commercial building. Owners also are seeking to purchase and raze the adjacent home on Oak Knoll, for use as a parking area.
