OHS baseball notches 3-win week

After two rainouts at the beginning of the week, Oakwood’s varsity baseball team closed the week with three straight wins to raise their season record to 12-1.
The Jacks hopped on board the Charbat Express on Wednesday, as sophomore righty Connor Charbat hurled a six-hit shutout at Waynesville. Oakwood’s steady defense, led by catcher Ian Munn, who gunned down two Spartan baserunners, and center fielder Andrew Morris, who made a diving catch, gave Charbat all the support he needed, as the Jacks coasted to an 8-0 win. At the plate, Oakwood could only manage six hits, but alert baserunning and some shaky defense by Waynesville provided plenty of run support. The Jacks’ only extra-base hit was a double by Munn, while Greg Ambrose chipped in two RBIs.

On Friday, Oakwood hosted Milton-Union and pounded their way to a 10-2 win. With the Jacks trailing 1-0 in the fourth, Tony Lamb evened the score with a blast over the visiting bleachers at Mack Hummon Stadium. It was all Oakwood from that point, as the Jacks tallied four runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth. Plenty of Oakwood hitters got into the act, as Colin Morris had three hits, including a triple, and Charbat and Kyle Kissock chipped in two hits apiece. Ben Roess was his usual stingy self on the mound, scattering five Bulldog hits over six innings to pick up the win for Oakwood, before giving way to Hank Beasore, who pitched a scoreless seventh to nail down the win.

Oakwood survived a wild see-saw battle on Saturday, escaping with a 12-11 win at Brookville. Shaky defense by both teams and a blustery wind made for a very interesting game. The Blue Devils pounced on starter Tyler Philo for three runs in the first. Only a great diving stop by third baseman Justin Reeder with the bases loaded prevented more damage. The Jacks answered back in the top of the second with four runs of their own, fueled by a two-run round tripper by Munn, but Brookville knotted the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the inning. Again, a bases-loaded defensive gem snuffed out a big inning, as Kissock started a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.

The Jacks opened up what appeared to be a commanding lead with six more runs in the top of the third, but Brookville’s center fielder flashed some leather of his own, reaching over the fence to haul in Lamb’s home run bid to end the inning and hold the Jacks to a 10-4 lead after 2 innings. Brookville closed the gap to 10-6 with a two-run dinger in the third. Andrew Morris took the mound for Oakwood in the fourth, and the teams traded two-run innings in the fifth, with Beasore coming out of the Oakwood bullpen to slam the door for the Jacks. Brookville pounded out two doubles and a homer off Ambrose in the sixth, closing the gap to 12-11 and setting up some last-inning drama. After holding Oakwood scoreless in the top of the inning, the Blue Devils opened their half of the seventh with a single.

The next batter hit a shot up the middle that Ambrose snagged and threw to first to double up the runner. Ambrose then struck the next man out to close out a hard-fought SWBL win for the Jacks. Five Oakwood hitters had multi-hit games, including Charbat with three, and Scott Harman, Colin Morris, Reeder, and Jack McIntyre with two apiece. Ambrose hit a double for the Jacks.

The Jacks (4-1 in the SWBL) enter a pivotal week in the league race, hosting rival Bellbrook yesterday, then playing back-to-back games against league-leading Franklin at home on Tuesday and at Franklin on Wednesday. The team returns home against Brookville on Thursday, then closes the week with a double-header at Carroll on Saturday.

Labrie also anchored the first place finishing 4x400M relay team of Karin Mueller, Sara French and Stephanie Telek. Mueller finished third in the 200M dash. Maddie Maney finished third in the 1600M Run. Laura German long jumped to a third place finish and carried the baton home for third in the 4x100M relay with Bria Meade, Maddie Lehrner, and Emi Banke. Marc Skill was third and Alec Snead fourth in the 3200M Run. Other fourth place finishers for the Jacks were, Michael Baumgartner in the discus, T. Gould in the 1600M Run, and Keith Mueller in the 800M Run. The 4x800M Relay team of Tory Tomlinson, Steven Hix, Ben Georgin, and Will Reese was also fourth.

In the distance medley, Shafer ran the 800M leg, McDonald the 400M, Molly Reese the 1200M, and Julia Sizek closed with the 1600M. The Jills finished third, just twenty-seven one-hundredths behind Chaminade-Julienne but three-tenths ahead of Kettering Fairmont.
