DCOWA talk on Berlin January 10

A talk on Berlin, Germany hosted by the Dayton Council on World Affairs will be given at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 33 W. Dixon Ave., Oakwood on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008 at 1 p.m. Cost is $3.  

Tom and Mary Ellen Graham’s trip to Germany, and Berlin in particular, is connected to the Friendship Force exchange program. The presentation will highlight their personal story, and will include valuable information on Friendship Force and describe exchanges with details drawn from their experiences with the Berlin club and hosts there.

Mary Ellen is a retired language arts teacher and Tom is an emeritus professor of Physics from UD. They have taken part in Friendship Force exchanges in Canada, Wales, Latvia, and Russia in addition to Germany. They’ve hosted club members from Germany, Canada and Russia.

Miami Valley Home Improvement Show Jan. 10-13

Hara Arena is bringing it home with heart at the 2008 Miami Valley Home Improvement Show. The award-winning show returns with all the exhibits, seminars and special features that the Miami Valley has come to expect.

Patrons can visit with home improvement specialists at over 120 displays, attend free seminars and do-it-yourself demon strations. Four impressive landscaping feature areas will give a preview of the blossoms and foliage to come. HGTV’s Matt and Shari will also be making a guest appearance on Saturday.

Show hours are Thursday, Jan. 10 & Friday, Jan. 11 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 12 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday, Jan. 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is only $6 for adults, free for kids under the age of 15. Parking is free.

Toddler reading at library Jan 14 

It is never too early to introduce your child to books.  Wright Library is offering two programs to help get toddlers and preschoolers ready to read:

Toddlers (accompanied by an adult) - Monday, Jan. 14, at 10:15 a.m.

Preschoolers - Monday, Feb. 18, at 10:15 a..m.

Both programs will last approximately 30 minutes and will be held in the library’s Meeting Room.  Mrs. G will lead age-appropriate games that enhance early reading skills.  No registration is required.
